The PADI AWARE Basis® is working with PADI® Dive Facilities, Resorts and Professionals in Brazil and South Africa to encourage the general public to rally their respective governments in help of mako shark fishing bans within the Atlantic Ocean.

Mako sharks are notably weak to overfishing, particularly within the North Atlantic, the place we now have seen populations decline severely. It's at present estimated that the shark inhabitants will take 50 years to completely recuperate if fishing bans have been carried out at this time,” says Ian Campbell, Affiliate Director, Coverage and Campaigns of PADI AWARE Basis. “By working immediately with PADI Members to boost consciousness of the difficulty with the diving group, we goal to encourage governmental help of mako shark protections within the Atlantic.

The PADI AWARE Basis, collaborating with the Shark League NGO coalition, launched the mako shark marketing campaign in February 2021. Along with the global #Divers4Makos petition that has earned almost 30,000 signatures up to now, the marketing campaign focuses on two key nations—Brazil and South Africa— whose governments have but to publicly help the ban. The marketing campaign offers PADI Dive Facilities, Resorts and Professionals within the areas with the PADI AWARE Shark Conservation course to allow them to immediately educate divers and members of the general public on the significance of mako sharks for the ocean.
